Notice anything different around site? Change is in the air (and the water)…

The Center Operations Directorate is in the process of several projects that will improve our Johnson Space Center campus. Building demolitions, a new water recirculation project, refurbishments and the remodeled Building 35 retreat center are included in their plans.
Here are the details:
Building 35 Retreat Center
Due to budget cuts across the center, organizations are now more focused on finding ways to “stretch” their budgets while still maintaining effectiveness. Buildings 35 and 29 are now available to host retreats, without cost, saving an average of several hundred dollars per day per event. The building is now being fully utilized and currently houses several groups such as the Houston Technology Center (HTC), as well as Space Center Houston for educational purposes. Mobile marker boards, writeable surfaces to brainstorm, videoconferencing capability, a liquid galaxy, 3D-Printer and portable projector are all available for use.

Mall-Area Pond Water Recirculation Project
The new water recirculation system for the three ponds and a waterfall in Pond 1 will dramatically reduce the water usage in the mall area. The purpose of the waterfall is to aerate the water to provide additional oxygen for the wildlife in the ponds and to push the water toward the connecting stream to achieve flow of water from Pond 1 to Pond 3. The installation of this water recirculation system has saved 6,690,442 gallons of potable water in the first year, which greatly contributes to the center’s goal of reducing water waste and becoming more sustainable.
Building 41 Demolition
Plant Operations Administration, Building 41, is a single story 1,247-square-foot pre-engineered metal building. The facility was demolished due to deterioration throughout the years and the cost of maintaining the facility. All employees assigned to the building have been relocated.
Building 45 Renovation
The North Wing of Building 45 is planned to be renovated late next year, 2014.The approximately 13,500 square feet will be transformed into a new facility to house the combined Space Flight Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Behavioral Health Groups from several other facility locations. The goals of the newly refurbished facility are to enhance the productivity, efficiency and standard of care for all three medicine groups. The current outdated and inefficient spaces struggle to meet group mission goals, and medical industry best practices call to reduce inherent physical obstructions and limitations in the existing facilities. The new location on the JSC campus west side, in the underutilized library pavilion shell, affords the convenience of being closer to the largest concentration of JSC team members. It is also closer to other nearby buildings with related NASA scientific groups who have allied missions with the clinic occupants.
Buildings 225 and 226 Demolition
The first building on site, Administrative Support Facility Annex, Building 226, as well as Building 225 are also being demolished in 2014 to save costs and reach our goals of increasing efficiency.
